Hryggjarliða

Hryggjarliða is a prominent cliff and hiking destination located in the southwest of Iceland, near the town of Hella in the southern region. The formation rises approximately 600 metres above sea level and overlooks the Fimmvörðuháls ridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The cliff is composed primarily of basaltic lava flows that were ejected during the Pleistocene volcanic episodes in the area.

The geological structure of Hryggjarliða is a well‑preserved example of columnar jointing, a feature commonly associated with ancient lava tubes. The steep, vertical faces attract rock climbers and climbers, while its foothills are marked by hardy alpenrose and bilberry shrubs adapted to the acidic soils. The microclimate along the cliff’s western slope retains moisture and supports a diversity of lichens and mosses.

Historically, the site has been mentioned in medieval Icelandic sagas as a strategic lookout point where local farmers would monitor passing raiders. In the 19th century, exploration of the western highlands by the Icelandic Society of Natural History recorded early geological surveys of the cliff. Today, Hryggjarliða is managed by the Icelandic Directorate of Nature and Forest and is included in the list of recommended sites in the official Guide to Natural Attractions of Iceland.

The name Hryggjarliða derives from the Icelandic words “hryggjar” (back, spine) and “liða” (to lie or stretch), collectively meaning ‘spine‑like stretch’. It appears in contemporary Icelandic cultural references, such as the 2007 Icelandic music festival where local bands performed under the shadow of the cliff, highlighting its role as a symbol of natural resilience in the region.
