Hormonfunktionen

Hormonfunktionen describes the physiological roles and mechanisms of action of hormones within an organism. Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands that travel through the bloodstream to target cells and organs, where they regulate a wide range of bodily functions. These functions include growth and development, metabolism, reproduction, mood, and sleep.

The process of hormone action typically involves a hormone binding to specific receptors on or within target cells. This binding triggers a cascade of intracellular events that ultimately alter the cell's activity. For example, insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, binds to receptors on liver, muscle, and fat cells, signaling them to take up glucose from the bloodstream, thus lowering blood sugar levels. Conversely, glucagon, also from the pancreas, signals the liver to release stored glucose, raising blood sugar.

Hormonal regulation is a complex feedback system. Levels of most hormones are maintained within a narrow range through negative feedback loops, where the effect of the hormone inhibits its further release. For instance, when thyroid hormone levels rise, they signal the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to reduce the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone, thus preventing excessive thyroid hormone secretion. Disruptions in hormonfunktionen can lead to various endocrine disorders.
