Their name derives from the Klingon word "hord" (meaning "rabbit") and "ans" (meaning "cat"), though their exact origins and biology remain largely unexplored in the broader Star Trek canon.

Hordans are notable for their rapid reproduction rates, which led to their infamous role in the Star Trek episode. In that story, a ship carrying thousands of tribbles—small, cuddly pets bred by the Hordans—was intercepted by the USS Enterprise. The tribbles, which multiplied uncontrollably, caused chaos by consuming all available food and resources aboard the ship. The Hordans themselves were only briefly mentioned as the breeders of these creatures, with little additional detail provided about their culture, society, or homeworld.

In later Star Trek media, Hordans have not been referenced extensively, and their role remains limited to a single, memorable appearance.
