Hoofdrotortype refers to the configuration of the main rotor system on a helicopter. This classification is based on how the rotor blades are attached and articulated to the rotor head, which is the central component connecting the blades to the helicopter's transmission. The primary distinctions in hoofdrotortype are typically between fully articulated, semi-rigid, and rigid rotor systems.

In a fully articulated rotor system, each main rotor blade has its own hinge, known as a flapping hinge and a drag hinge. The flapping hinge allows blades to move up and down, compensating for aerodynamic forces and enabling cyclic pitch control. The drag hinge allows blades to move forward and backward, mitigating inertial effects. This type of system provides the most flexibility and is common on larger helicopters.

A semi-rigid rotor system, also known as a rigid or flex rotor, uses a single flapping hinge for all blades. The blades are typically connected to a common yoke or strap. This system is simpler and lighter than a fully articulated system but offers less flexibility in blade movement. It is often found on smaller, lighter helicopters.

A rigid rotor system, sometimes referred to as a hingeless rotor, does not have any flapping or drag hinges. The rotor blades are directly attached to the rotor head, which itself is flexible and designed to absorb the forces and movements. This system offers a direct and responsive control feel but can impose higher stresses on the airframe and blades. It is found on some modern helicopters, particularly those designed for high maneuverability. The choice of hoofdrotortype significantly influences a helicopter's handling characteristics, performance, and complexity.
