Holovaty

Holovaty is a surname. The most widely known bearer is Adrian Holovaty, an American web programmer and journalist who co-created the Django web framework. While working at the Lawrence Journal-World in Kansas, Holovaty and Simon Willison began developing a high-level web framework intended to support rapid, pragmatic web development. Django was released as open source in 2005 and has since become one of the most popular frameworks for Python-based web applications.

Django is designed to encourage clean, reusable code and rapid development. It provides a structured approach to building web applications, including an ORM, templates, authentication, and an administrative interface. Over the years Django has been adopted by a wide range of sites and services, reflecting its emphasis on scalability, security, and maintainability.

Holovaty also co-founded Everyblock, a local-information service that aggregates public data and news for neighborhoods. The project explored how open data and data journalism could be used to present city-level information in a searchable, structured form.

Beyond Django and Everyblock, Holovaty has contributed to the open-source software community and written about technology, data, and journalism. His work has influenced approaches to structuring data for news and civic information and has been cited in discussions at the intersection of journalism and software development.
