Hofschaften
Hofschaften are a form of rural settlement found primarily in the Bergisches Land region of Germany. These settlements are characterized by a cluster of farmhouses and associated buildings, often situated in valleys or on hillsides, typically surrounded by agricultural land. Unlike a village, a Hofschaft is usually smaller and less formally organized, often originating from a single large farm or estate (Hof) that gradually expanded as its lands were divided among family members or sold to others. The name "Hofschaft" itself derives from the German word "Hof," meaning courtyard or farmstead.
Historically, Hofschaften developed organically as a way for farmers to live and work close to their land.
