Hochsprachen

Hochsprachen, in linguistic usage, refer to the codified, prestige varieties of a language that are used in formal contexts such as education, administration and literature. They are distinguished from regional dialects and everyday spoken registers by standardized grammar, spelling and vocabulary, typically codified in normative grammars and dictionaries and transmitted through schools and media. In German-language contexts, Hochsprache commonly denotes the Standard German (Hochdeutsch), the form of the language taught nationwide and used in official communication. The concept can also apply to standard forms in other languages, where a single normed variety serves as the codified standard.

Standard varieties typically emerge from the needs of administration, education and literature, and consolidate through printing, publishing, and mass media. In German, historical milestones include the Luther Bible translation in the 16th century and subsequent standardization by grammars, dictionaries (such as Duden), and school curricula. Since then, regional dialects continued to thrive in speech but the Hochsprache remains the fixed reference for writing and formal speech.

Hochsprachen function as a supradialectal norm; speakers often know and use Hochsprache in formal contexts, while in informal settings they may switch to local dialects or mixed varieties. The term Hochsprache is not a single language in itself but a social-linguistic category describing the standard form of a language. Within Hochsprachen there are registers and sociolects; the grammar tends to be normative, but actual speech shows regional and social variation, especially in pronunciation and vocabulary.
