Hmu

Hmu can refer to more than one concept, depending on the context. In modern digital communication, hmu is an acronym for “hit me up,” used to invite someone to contact the speaker via phone, text, or social media. It appears in informal messages, captions, and chat, with variations in capitalization such as HMU or hmu.

In linguistics, hmu is the ISO 639-3 code for the Hmu language. The Hmu language is a Loloish language within the Sino-Tibetan family and is spoken by the Hmu people in parts of Myanmar (Burma) and China. It has multiple dialects, and it is one of several minority languages in its region. These two uses of “Hmu” are unrelated in origin: the slang term arises from English-language messaging conventions, while the language designation derives from the ethnolinguistic naming of the Hmu people.
