Hljóðþrýstingsstig, often abbreviated as SPL, is a measure of the intensity of sound in a given area. It is quantified on a logarithmic scale and expressed in decibels (dB). The decibel scale is used because the range of human hearing is very wide, and a logarithmic scale allows for a more manageable representation of these vast differences in sound pressure. SPL is directly related to the root-mean-square pressure of the sound wave.

The reference pressure for SPL is typically set at the threshold of human hearing, which is approximately 20 micropascals (µPa) in air. This means that a sound with an SPL of 0 dB corresponds to this very quiet sound. As sound intensity increases, the SPL value rises. For example, a normal conversation might be around 60 dB SPL, while a rock concert could easily reach 120 dB SPL. Prolonged exposure to sound levels above 85 dB SPL can lead to hearing damage.

SPL measurements are crucial in various fields, including acoustics, audio engineering, environmental noise monitoring, and occupational health and safety. Specialized equipment called sound level meters is used to accurately measure SPL. These devices typically have a microphone that converts sound pressure variations into an electrical signal, which is then processed to display the SPL value in decibels. Understanding SPL helps in assessing noise pollution, designing acoustically optimized spaces, and protecting hearing.
