In aqueous solutions, the closely related concept is the hydrogen ion concentration [H+], which determines pH through the relation pH = -log10[H+]. Measurement techniques include thermal desorption spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), nuclear reaction analysis, and neutron-based methods, each providing information on hydrogen content and distribution.

Applications of the concept span chemistry, electrochemistry, environmental science, energy storage, and manufacturing.
