Hitsauslasit, also known as welding helmets or welding shields, are essential personal protective equipment for anyone engaged in welding operations. Their primary function is to protect the welder's eyes and face from the intense ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation emitted by the welding arc. This radiation can cause severe eye damage, including arc eye (photokeratitis) and long-term vision problems.

Traditional welding helmets feature a fixed-shade, tinted lens. These lenses are designed to filter out harmful light wavelengths, allowing the welder to see the weld pool while remaining protected. The shade number of the lens indicates its level of darkness, with higher numbers offering greater protection for more intense welding processes.

Modern welding helmets often incorporate auto-darkening filter (ADF) technology. These advanced helmets use electronic sensors to detect the welding arc and automatically darken the lens within fractions of a second. When the arc is extinguished, the lens returns to its clear state. ADF helmets offer greater convenience and improved visibility between welds, as the welder does not need to manually lower or raise the helmet.

Beyond eye protection, welding helmets also shield the welder's face and neck from sparks, spatter, and hot metal debris. The helmet's design and material are crucial for providing this broader protection. Proper fit and comfort are also important considerations, as welders may wear these helmets for extended periods. Regular inspection and maintenance of welding helmets are necessary to ensure their continued effectiveness and safety.
