Hitelinformációs, literally “credit information” in Hungarian, refers to the body of data that describes the creditworthiness of a person or organization. In practice the term is used to describe the services and datasets maintained by credit information providers that lenders rely on to evaluate risk.

Contents and sources: It includes repayment histories, outstanding loan balances, payment timeliness, and defaults, as well as public records such as bankruptcies or judgments. It may also include credit scores or risk assessments and basic identifiers. Data are collected from banks, financial institutions, utility and telecom companies, and public registers, and are processed under contractual agreements or legal permissions for credit evaluation.

Use and access: Lenders use credit information to decide whether to grant credit and on what terms, including interest rate and credit limit. Individuals can request access to their own records, correct inaccuracies, and contest data under applicable data protection law; lenders also require consent or a legitimate interest to retrieve data about a consumer.

Regulation and privacy: In Hungary, credit information processing is governed by data protection and consumer credit regulations aligned with the EU’s GDPR. Operators must ensure accuracy, limit purposes, and provide rights of access, correction, and objection; retention periods are defined by law and contract.
