Hispaniolas

Hispaniolas refers to the people, places, and things associated with the island of Hispaniola. Hispaniola is a Caribbean island in the Greater Antilles, divided into two independent nations: Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east. The island was the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, established by Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The indigenous people of Hispaniola were the Taíno, who had a complex society and culture prior to European arrival. The arrival of Columbus and subsequent Spanish colonization led to a drastic decline in the Taíno population due to disease, enslavement, and violence. The eastern part, Santo Domingo, remained under Spanish rule for longer periods, eventually becoming the Dominican Republic in 1844.
