Hi-resolution, commonly written as high resolution, refers to a level of detail in digital images, video, audio, and printed media that exceeds standard-definition formats. In digital imaging, resolution is the number of distinct details described by pixels; for images and sensors it is expressed as width × height in pixels (for example 3840 × 2160) and sometimes as total megapixels. For displays and projectors, resolution denotes the number of picture elements shown, with widely used targets including 1080p, 4K, and 8K. In printing, resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi) or pixels per inch (ppi), reflecting how densely content is sampled or printed.

Higher resolution can preserve detail when resizing, cropping, or viewing on large screens, but it also increases file sizes, bandwidth, and processing requirements. The perceptual benefits depend on viewing distance, display size, optics, lighting, and compression. In audio, Hi-Res Audio denotes sample rates and bit depths above CD quality, a separate use of the term. Overall, "hi-resolution" is a relative concept tied to technology capabilities, viewing conditions, and user expectations, and standards bodies provide objective metrics while consumer perception continues to evolve with advances in imaging and display tech.
