Hindic

Hindic is a historical and occasionally encountered designation for a sub-branch of the Indo-Aryan languages associated with the central and northern Indian subcontinent, particularly the Hindustan region. The name derives from Hindustan, the traditional term for the vast plains of northern India. In modern linguistic practice, Hindic is not a widely adopted, formal subgroup; most scholars classify the relevant varieties under Indo-Aryan and frequently refer to Hindustani or central Indo-Aryan varieties rather than a distinct Hindic branch.

The scope of the term has varied. In some uses, Hindic covers central Hindi- and Urdu-speaking lects and closely related dialects such as Braj, Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Magahi. In others, the term is broader or more historical, reflecting shared phonological and morphological traits rather than strict genealogy. Common features attributed to Hindic varieties include an SOV syntax, postpositions, a complex consonant system with aspirated and retroflex consonants, and a tendency toward loss of certain early Indo-Aryan inflections. The writing systems are diverse: Devanagari is standard for many Hindic-identified lects (e.g., Hindi), while the Perso-Arabic script is standard for Urdu, and other scripts such as Gurmukhi are used for related languages in nearby regions.

The term appears in some late 19th to mid-20th-century linguistic literature and is less common in contemporary classification, where “Indo-Aryan” and “Hindustani” are preferred for most practical references.
