Hiekkamuotijärjestelmä

Hiekkamuotijärjestelmä, often translated as sand molding system, refers to a manufacturing process used primarily in foundries for casting metals. It involves creating a mold from damp sand, which is then packed around a pattern of the desired object. Once the sand mold is formed, the pattern is removed, leaving a cavity into which molten metal is poured. After the metal solidifies and cools, the sand mold is broken away to reveal the cast part.

The core components of a hiekkamuotijärjestelmä include sand, binders, and additives. The sand provides the bulk of the mold material. Binders, such as clay or chemical agents, are mixed with the sand to give it strength and coherence. Additives are used to improve specific properties of the sand mixture, such as its flowability, refractoriness (resistance to heat), or gas permeability.

The process can be broadly categorized into two main types: green sand molding and dry sand molding. Green sand molding uses sand that is kept moist with water, relying on the moisture and the binder for mold strength. Dry sand molding, on the other hand, involves baking the sand mold after it is formed, which hardens the binders and increases the mold's strength and stability.

Its simplicity and adaptability make it a staple in many industrial casting operations. The system’s ability to be reused, with sand often being reclaimed and reconditioned, also contributes to its economic efficiency.
