Hiekkakerrostuminen, also known as sedimentary structures or sedimentary textures, refers to the physical features and arrangements of sedimentary rocks that provide information about the processes that formed them. These structures are formed by the deposition, transportation, and lithification of sediments in various environments such as marine, fluvial, and aeolian settings. They can be classified into two main categories: primary structures and secondary structures.

Primary structures are those that form at the time of deposition, such as bedding, cross-bedding, and ripple marks. Bedding, or stratification, refers to the layering of sediments, which can be caused by changes in sediment supply, energy levels, or both. Cross-bedding, also known as cross-stratification, occurs when sediment is deposited on the inclined surfaces of dunes or ripples, resulting in sets of inclined layers. Ripple marks are small-scale, symmetrical or asymmetrical features formed by the movement of water or wind over sediment.

Secondary structures, on the other hand, form after deposition and lithification, such as fractures, joints, and faults. Fractures are cracks in the rock that can be caused by tectonic forces, thermal contraction, or other processes. Joints are planar fractures that form without significant displacement, while faults are fractures with significant displacement along the plane.

The study of sedimentary structures is important in understanding the depositional environments, paleocurrents, and the history of sedimentary basins. They can also provide valuable information for hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir characterization. By analyzing the features and arrangements of sedimentary rocks, geologists can reconstruct the ancient environments and processes that shaped the Earth's surface.
