Heterosiseffekt

Heterosiseffekt, also known as hybrid vigor, is a phenomenon in genetics where the offspring of two different purebred varieties exhibit traits superior to either parent. This typically occurs when parents with dissimilar genotypes are crossed. The offspring, or hybrids, often display enhanced characteristics such as increased size, vigor, fertility, yield, or resistance to disease.

The underlying mechanism of heterosis is believed to be related to the masking of deleterious recessive alleles. When two different inbred lines are crossed, each parent may carry different recessive genes that are detrimental to certain traits. In the hybrid offspring, these recessive alleles are often masked by dominant alleles inherited from the other parent, leading to an improvement in the overall phenotype.

Heterosis is a crucial concept in plant and animal breeding. For instance, in agriculture, hybrid varieties of corn, wheat, and other crops are widely cultivated because of their increased yields and resilience. Similarly, in livestock breeding, crossbreeding is employed to produce animals with desirable traits like faster growth rates or improved meat quality. The commercial production of hybrid seeds and animals relies heavily on understanding and exploiting the heterosis effect.
