Heterocyklických refers to a class of organic compounds that contain a ring structure with at least one atom that is not carbon. These non-carbon atoms, known as heteroatoms, are typically nitrogen, oxygen, or sulfur. The presence of heteroatoms significantly influences the chemical and physical properties of the molecule compared to its carbocyclic (all-carbon ring) counterparts.

The study of heterocycles is a vast and crucial area within organic chemistry, as these compounds are fundamental to many biological processes and are found in numerous natural products and pharmaceuticals. For example, DNA and RNA, the building blocks of genetic material, contain heterocyclic bases. Many vitamins, such as riboflavin and thiamine, also incorporate heterocyclic rings.

Heterocyclic compounds are broadly categorized based on the size of the ring and the type and number of heteroatoms present. Common ring sizes include five-membered rings like furan, pyrrole, and thiophene, and six-membered rings such as pyridine and pyrimidine. Many modern medicines, including antibiotics, antivirals, and anti-cancer agents, are heterocyclic in nature.
