Herwing

Herwing is a municipality in the district of Stendal, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The area of Herwing has a long history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The village was first mentioned in written records in the 12th century, although it is believed to have existed earlier. Herwing's location near the River Ue in a fertile valley made it an attractive place for settlers.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Herwing underwent significant changes. The area experienced economic growth as a result of the agricultural and crafts sector. This led to the construction of several churches, including a Protestant stone church, which is still standing today.

The village played a significant role in the latter half of the 20th century during the Nazi era and its immediate aftermath. Many residents were conscripted into the war or experienced Nazi persecution. The state administered demarcation of 1945 led to significant changes in the local population with the influx of refugees and expellees.

In the post-war period, Herwing underwent significant physical changes. New residential buildings were erected, public amenities were updated, and new economic initiatives were established. In 1952, the district of Zerbst was established, with Herwing becoming part of the new entity.
