Hermoverkon

Hermoverkon is a Finnish term that denotes the nervous system, the complex network that coordinates sensation, movement and internal regulation by transmitting electrical and chemical signals between the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body. The word combines hermo, meaning nerve, and verkko, meaning network. In English-language contexts the broader term nervous system is used, but hermoverkon appears widely in Finnish medical and educational writing.

Its main divisions are the central nervous system (CNS), containing the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), consisting of nerves and ganglia outside the CNS. The PNS includes somatic pathways that control voluntary movement and sensory input, and autonomic pathways that regulate involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion and glandular activity. The CNS acts as the processing center, integrating information and coordinating responses.

Developmentally, the hermoverkon arises from the ectoderm, with neural tissue forming the neural tube that gives rise to the brain and spinal cord. Neurons and glial cells differentiate and connect through synapses to create functional circuits. Its operation relies on fast electrochemical signaling via neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, as well as structural support from glial cells.
