Hermopäätöön

Hermopäätöön is a Finnish term that translates to "nerve ending" or "nerve terminal." It refers to the specialized structure at the end of a neuron (nerve cell) that is responsible for transmitting signals to other cells. These target cells can be other neurons, muscle cells, or gland cells.

The primary function of a hermopäätöön is to facilitate synaptic transmission. When an electrical signal, known as an action potential, reaches the nerve ending, it triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are stored in tiny sacs within the hermopäätöön called synaptic vesicles. Upon release, they cross the synaptic cleft, the small gap between the nerve ending and the target cell, and bind to specific receptors on the target cell's membrane. This binding initiates a response in the target cell, either exciting it to fire its own signal or inhibiting it from doing so.
