Hermojärjestelmän

Hermojärjestelmän, or the nervous system in Finnish, is the complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. It is responsible for coordinating actions and sensory information by transmitting signals between different parts of the body. The nervous system allows organisms to detect and respond to stimuli in their environment.

It is broadly divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord, acting as the body's command center. The PNS comprises all the nerves outside the CNS, connecting the CNS to the limbs and organs.

The fundamental unit of the nervous system is the neuron, or nerve cell. Neurons transmit electrochemical signals, enabling communication throughout the body. These signals are crucial for everything from basic reflexes to complex thought processes.

The nervous system controls both voluntary actions, such as walking, and involuntary functions, like breathing and digestion. It processes sensory input from sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, allowing us to perceive and interact with the world. Disorders of the hermojärjestelmän can lead to a wide range of conditions affecting physical and cognitive functions.
