Heraclitus

Heraclitus of Ephesus was a Greek philosopher who lived approximately between 535 and 475 BCE. Often referred to as "Heraclitus the Obscure" due to his cryptic style of writing, he is best known for his doctrine that change is fundamental to the nature of the universe. Heraclitus believed that everything is in a constant state of flux, emphasizing the ever-changing nature of reality. His famous aphorism "You cannot step into the same river twice" encapsulates this idea, illustrating that both the water and the observer are in continuous movement.

Heraclitus posited that the underlying essence of the universe is unity expressed through perpetual change, which he described using the concept of the "Logos." The Logos, in his view, is an unifying principle that governs the cosmos, providing order amid chaos. Despite acknowledging change, Heraclitus also recognized a form of stability within the ongoing flux, seeing it as governed by intelligible laws.

His philosophy influenced later thinkers, particularly in the development of metaphysics and the understanding of nature. Heraclitus also held that fire is the primary substance of the universe, symbolizing constant transformation and the dynamic nature of existence.

Heraclitus's writings are largely fragmentary, surviving through quotations in the works of other philosophers and historians. His emphasis on change and the unity of opposites set the groundwork for later philosophical inquiries into the nature of reality and the process of becoming.
