Heptafluoride
Heptafluoride is a general term referring to a chemical compound containing seven fluorine atoms bonded to another element. These compounds are often highly reactive and possess unique properties due to the electronegativity of fluorine. The most well-known example of a heptafluoride is iodine heptafluoride (IF7). Iodine heptafluoride is a colorless gas at room temperature and pressure. It is a powerful fluorinating agent and a strong oxidizing agent. It reacts violently with water and many organic compounds. The structure of IF7 is pentagonal bipyramidal, a geometry dictated by the VSEPR theory. Other elements can also form heptafluorides, though they are less common or stable. For instance, rhenium heptafluoride (ReF7) exists and is also a strong fluorinating agent.
