Helyiértékes is a Hungarian term that translates to "local value" or "place value" in English. It refers to the concept in mathematics of the value a digit has based on its position within a number. For example, in the number 345, the digit '3' has a local value of 300, the digit '4' has a local value of 40, and the digit '5' has a local value of 5. Understanding local value is fundamental to comprehending the structure of our number system, which is based on powers of ten.

The Hindu-Arabic numeral system, commonly used worldwide, is a positional numeral system. This means that the position of a digit determines its magnitude. Each position represents a power of the base, which is 10 in this case. Moving from right to left, the positions represent units (10^0), tens (10^1), hundreds (10^2), thousands (10^3), and so on. The local value of a digit is then the digit itself multiplied by the value of its position.
