Heliallika

Heliallika is a constructed language created for a fictional world centered on the archipelago of Helia. It was developed as part of a world-building project and appears in novels, games, and supplementary materials published since the early 2010s. In its setting, Heliallika is the traditional language of seafaring communities who revere the sun.

Name and classification: The name combines Helia with the suffix -llika, used in the world’s linguistic taxonomy to denote speech. The language is described by its creators as agglutinative and head-marking, with affixation encoding tense, aspect, mood, number, and case. It shares a family likeness with other Helian languages in the fictional locale.

Phonology and script: Heliallika has five vowels and about 22 consonants, including stops, fricatives, nasals, and approximants; no phonemic tone. Syllables are typically CV or CVC, with occasional VV sequences. The writing system, known as the Heliallika script, is a featural alphabet where diacritics mark case and aspect. In-universe inscriptions use the script on wood, bone, and stone.

Grammar and usage: The language largely follows a subject–object–verb order, though rich case marking allows flexible word order. Nouns take nominative, accusative, genitive, and dative cases; adjectives generally follow nouns. Verbs use extensive affixation for aspect, mood, and evidentiality. Heliallika is central to poetry, liturgy, and maritime lore in the fictional setting.
