Heightening is the act or process of increasing height, intensity, or significance. In physical terms, it can mean making an object taller or elevating a surface. In figurative uses, it refers to raising the level of tension, importance, or emotional impact in a given context.

In rhetoric and literary studies, heightening is a technique that amplifies meaning or emotion to enhance impact. It often involves repetition, accumulation of detail, intensification (including hyperbole), and gradation toward a climax. This approach is related to amplification and can be used to underscore stakes, mood, or thematic resonance.

In performing arts and film, heightening shapes audience engagement through pacing, staging, lighting, sound, and camera or stage directions. Dramatic heightening is achieved by increasing tempo, contrast, or visual and auditory cues to build suspense and guide emotional response.
