Hauptmenge

Hauptmenge is a German term meaning the main or underlying set, and it is used in mathematics to denote the base set on which a structure is defined. Unlike a fully formalized, universally fixed notion, its precise meaning varies with context and is often equivalent to terms such as Grundmenge, Universum, or Grundgesamtheit in the respective text.

In many formal structures M = (A, R_i, f_j), the Hauptmenge corresponds to the set A, which serves as the carrier or domain for all objects, relations, and operations that appear in the structure. It is the universe from which elements are drawn and over which quantification occurs. For example, in a graph G = (V, E), the Hauptmenge is V, the vertex set; in an algebraic structure, it is the underlying set of elements on which the algebraic operations are defined.

The term is not universally standardized, and some authors prefer alternative terminology such as Grundmenge or Universum to avoid ambiguity. The Hauptmenge is typically emphasized when it is important that all relevant objects live within a single base set, distinct from external labels, parameters, or external relations.
