Hauptfigur
Hauptfigur is a German term used in literary and media analysis to denote the central figure of a work. The Hauptfigur is the character around whom the narrative primarily revolves. This figure usually has the strongest motivation, drives the action, and bears the most extensive development, whether through a clear character arc or a more static representation serving thematic purposes. In many cases, the Hauptfigur is synonymous with the Protagonist, but not always; the Protagonist is the character whose goals motivate the plot, while the Hauptfigur is the central figure in the story’s structure and perspective. A work may therefore feature a Hauptfigur who is not the narrator, or multiple Hauptfiguren in an ensemble cast.
