Hatásméretet, often translated as effect size, is a quantitative measure of the magnitude of a phenomenon. In statistical analysis, it represents the strength of the relationship between two variables or the difference between two groups, independent of the sample size. Unlike p-values, which indicate whether an effect is statistically significant, effect size tells us how important or meaningful that effect is.

Several statistics are used to quantify effect size, depending on the type of data and research question. For comparing means between two groups, Cohen's d is commonly used, representing the difference between group means in standard deviation units. For relationships between categorical variables, measures like Cramer's V or the odds ratio are employed. For correlations, the correlation coefficient itself (r) serves as an effect size.

Understanding effect size is crucial for interpreting research findings. A statistically significant result with a small effect size might not be practically important, while a large effect size, even if not statistically significant due to a small sample, could still suggest a meaningful phenomenon. Effect sizes help in comparing results across different studies and in conducting meta-analyses, which combine findings from multiple studies to arrive at a more robust conclusion. They provide a standardized way to assess the impact of interventions, treatments, or observed differences, aiding in decision-making and the advancement of knowledge.
