Harkittavat

Harkittavat is a small language cluster spoken by coastal communities in the Harkittava Archipelago, off the northern coast of Valdoria. It serves as a community language in daily life, traditional storytelling, and local schooling, though transmission to younger generations varies by island. The cluster includes several dialects with overlapping but distinct vocabularies and pronunciations.

Classification and names: Linguists generally regard Harkittavat as either a language isolate or a very small language family within the Valdorian linguistic area. The main dialects are North Harkittavat, Central Harkittavat, and South Harkittavat, each associated with a group of islands.

Phonology and grammar: The language typically uses subject–object–verb order and employs affixal morphology to mark tense and agreement. It has a five-vowel system and a moderate consonant inventory, including a contrast between voiceless and voiced stops. Stress tends to fall on the first heavy syllable of a word.

History and status: Estimates place speakers in the hundreds to about a thousand. Language shift toward the dominant national tongue has increased in recent decades. Documentation began in the late 20th century, and revitalization programs are in place in several communities.
