Happiyhdisteitä, or oxygen compounds, refers to chemical compounds that contain oxygen as their primary or a significant constituent element. In inorganic chemistry, common examples of oxygen compounds include oxides, where oxygen is bonded to another element. Water (H2O) is a ubiquitous and essential oxygen compound, classified as a hydrogen oxide. Other common inorganic oxygen compounds include carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas vital for photosynthesis and respiration, and silicon dioxide (SiO2), the primary component of sand and quartz. Peroxides are a class of oxygen compounds characterized by a weak oxygen-oxygen single bond, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

Organic chemistry deals with compounds containing carbon, and many organic molecules incorporate oxygen. Functional groups containing oxygen are fundamental to organic chemistry. These include alcohols (R-OH), ethers (R-O-R'), aldehydes (R-CHO), ketones (R-CO-R'), carboxylic acids (R-COOH), and esters (R-COO-R'). These oxygen-containing organic compounds are vital in biological processes, pharmaceuticals, polymers, and many industrial applications.
