Happakatalyysin

Happakatalyysin, or oxidation catalysis, is a subfield of catalysis focused on accelerating oxidation reactions through the use of catalysts. In these processes, a substrate is converted by transferring oxygen from an oxidant such as molecular oxygen (O2) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to the organic or inorganic molecule being oxidized. The catalyst participates in a redox cycle that is regenerated by the oxidant, enabling repeated turnover.

The field covers both heterogeneous and homogeneous systems. In heterogeneous oxidation catalysis, solid catalysts such as metal oxides (for example vanadium pentoxide V2O5, tungsten oxides, or manganese oxides) and supported noble metals (Pt, Pd, Au, Ru on various supports) enable reactions on their surfaces. In homogeneous systems, metal complexes dissolved in a solvent can activate oxygen and transfer it to substrates. Common reaction pathways include Mars-van Krevelen mechanisms, where lattice oxygen participates in oxidation and the catalyst is re-oxidized by O2, and Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanisms, where both substrate and oxidant adsorb and react on the surface.

Applications of happakatalyysin are broad. Industrially important examples include the oxidation of sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide in the contact process, using V2O5 catalysts; partial oxidation and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to aldehydes, ketones, or epoxides; and catalytic combustion and pollution abatement processes. The goal in many systems is high activity with selective oxidation to desired products, while minimizing over-oxidation and catalyst deactivation.

Key challenges include achieving high selectivity, preventing catalyst deactivation by coking or sintering, and designing catalysts that operate under mild conditions with long-term stability. Advances rely on a combination of surface science, spectroscopy, and computational modeling to understand active sites and reaction mechanisms.
