Hampaidenjäännöksiä, often referred to as retained root fragments or simply root remnants, are small pieces of tooth structure that remain in the jawbone after a tooth has been extracted or has broken. These fragments can occur for various reasons, including incomplete extraction, tooth fracture, or resorption of the crown.

The presence of hampaidenjäännöksiä is not always problematic, and many remain asymptomatic for extended periods. However, they can sometimes lead to complications. Inflammation of the surrounding tissues, known as periapical periodontitis, can develop if bacteria infect the root fragment and the area around it. This infection can manifest as pain, swelling, or the formation of an abscess. In some cases, chronic inflammation may contribute to bone loss in the jaw.

Diagnosis of hampaidenjäännöksiä is typically made through dental X-rays, such as periapical or panoramic radiographs. These images help dentists visualize the location and size of the fragments. Treatment depends on whether the fragment is causing symptoms or posing a risk. If asymptomatic and small, it may be left in place and monitored. However, if symptomatic or potentially problematic, surgical removal is often recommended. This procedure, called an apicoectomy or root resection in some contexts, aims to eliminate the source of infection and prevent further complications. Proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are important for monitoring any remaining fragments and addressing potential issues promptly.
