Halogenideja

Halogenideja are chemical compounds derived from halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine) by combining with metals, hydrogen, or carbon. They include inorganic halides such as metal halides (sodium chloride NaCl, calcium fluoride CaF2), hydrogen halides (hydrogen chloride HCl, hydrogen fluoride HF), and organic halides (alkyl halides like chloromethane CH3Cl). The term is used in several languages to refer to halides in general.

Classification and properties: Inorganic halides often form ionic solids with high melting points; organic halides contain covalent bonds and include a large variety of compounds. Hydrogen halides are typically gaseous or liquid and form aqueous acids; the strength of H-X bonding and acid strength in water follows the halogen. Halogenide bonds can be formed by reaction of a halogen with a metal or nonmetal, or via substitution reactions in organic chemistry, where a hydrogen or other substituent is replaced by a halogen.

Occurrence and uses: Halide minerals are common in nature, with NaCl as the best-known example. Industrially, halides serve as feedstocks for metallurgy, chemical synthesis, catalysts, and materials. Organic halides are used as solvents (e.g., chloroform), refrigerants, pesticides, and monomer precursors for polymers like vinyl chloride.

Safety and environment: Many halogenideja are hazardous; hydrogen halides are corrosive; some organic halides are toxic or ozone-depleting. Handling requires appropriate safety measures.
