Halogenaustausch, also known as halogen exchange or Finkelstein reaction when referring to iodide for chloride or bromide, is a chemical reaction where a halogen atom in an organic compound is replaced by another halogen atom. This transformation is typically achieved through nucleophilic substitution. The driving force for the reaction is often the formation of a more stable halide salt or a compound with a weaker carbon-halogen bond in the product.

Commonly, the reaction involves converting alkyl chlorides or bromides into alkyl iodides using an alkali metal iodide such as sodium iodide or potassium iodide. The solubility of the halide salts plays a crucial role; for instance, in acetone, sodium iodide is soluble while sodium chloride and bromide are not, leading to the precipitation of the latter and driving the equilibrium towards the formation of the alkyl iodide. Similarly, fluorination can be achieved by reacting alkyl chlorides, bromides, or iodides with metal fluorides like potassium fluoride, often in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst or polar aprotic solvents.

Halogen exchange reactions are valuable synthetic tools in organic chemistry, enabling the preparation of a wide range of halogenated organic compounds.
