It refers to any device or measure designed to prevent or minimize damage to a person's hearing from excessive noise exposure. This can include a wide range of products and practices, from simple earplugs to complex earmuffs and noise-canceling systems.

The primary function of hearing protection is to reduce the intensity of sound waves reaching the inner ear. Prolonged exposure to loud noises, even at moderate levels, can cause irreversible damage to the delicate hair cells in the cochlea, leading to noise-induced hearing loss.
