Halftoneruutujen, often referred to as halftone screens, are a fundamental technique in graphic reproduction. They are used to simulate continuous-tone images, such as photographs, by breaking them down into a series of dots of varying sizes and spacing. When viewed from a distance, the human eye blends these dots together, creating the illusion of shades of gray or color. This process is crucial for printing processes that can only apply solid ink.

The concept of halftoning dates back to the late 19th century and was a major advancement in printing technology. Early methods involved manually creating screens, while modern techniques utilize digital algorithms. These algorithms analyze the tonal values of an image and calculate the appropriate dot size and placement for each area. Different screen rulings, measured in lines per inch (lpi), determine the fineness of the dots and thus the level of detail in the reproduction. Higher lpi screens produce finer detail but require higher quality printing.

Halftoning is employed across various printing applications, including newspapers, magazines, books, and commercial printing.
