Hairnets

Hairnets are lightweight head coverings worn to contain and conceal the hair, reducing the risk of loose hairs and dandruff entering products or work environments. They are commonly used in food service, healthcare, laboratories, and manufacturing.

Most hairnets are made from fine meshes of nylon, polyester, or polypropylene and are available as disposable or reusable items. Styles include simple net sheaths, bouffant caps, and full-coverage snoods. Elastic edges or drawcords secure the net around the head, and many nets come in one-size-fits-most designs.

In regulated settings, hairnets help meet hygiene and safety standards. Food safety codes, such as those used in many countries, require head coverings to prevent contamination. They are commonly used alongside other PPE and proper hair restraints, beards and mustaches included.

Care and disposal. Hairnets are typically disposable in many settings and should be discarded after contamination or at the end of a shift. Reusable nets can be laundered according to manufacturer instructions, usually in hot water with thorough drying. Store nets in a clean, dry area and replace them when damaged.

History. Hairnets gained prominence with the growth of modern food service and strict hygiene standards in the 20th century.
