Haestiréttur
Haestiréttur is the supreme court of Iceland. It is the highest judicial body in the country and has the final say in all legal matters. The court consists of a presiding justice and eight other justices, all of whom are appointed by the President of Iceland for life. Haestiréttur hears appeals from lower courts and can also review the constitutionality of laws. The court's decisions are binding on all lower courts and government agencies. The establishment of a permanent supreme court in Iceland dates back to 1919. Before that, judicial authority was vested in different bodies depending on the era, including a high court established in the 19th century. The court plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring the consistent application of legal principles throughout Iceland. Its proceedings are open to the public, and its judgments are published. The court is located in Reykjavík.
