HDRtechnologieën, or High Dynamic Range technologies, refer to a set of advancements in imaging and display systems that significantly expand the range of luminance and color that can be reproduced compared to Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). This increased range allows for brighter highlights, deeper blacks, and a wider spectrum of colors, resulting in images that are more lifelike and visually immersive.

The core concept behind HDR is to capture and display a greater difference between the brightest and darkest parts of an image. This is achieved through various technical implementations, including increased peak brightness levels on displays and improved bit depth in video signals. Higher bit depth, such as 10-bit or 12-bit color, allows for a smoother gradation of colors and prevents banding, further enhancing the visual quality.

There are several prominent HDR standards, each with its own specifications and metadata handling. Common examples include HDR10, which is an open standard and widely adopted, utilizing static metadata. Dolby Vision is a proprietary standard that employs dynamic metadata, allowing for frame-by-frame adjustments to optimize the image for each specific display. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is another standard, particularly useful for broadcast applications, as it is backward compatible with SDR displays.

The benefits of HDRtechnologieën are evident across various media, including television, movies, photography, and video games. Viewers can experience more detail in both very bright and very dark scenes, with richer colors and a greater sense of depth. This technology is rapidly becoming the norm for high-quality content consumption.
