HDRencoded

HDRencoded refers to a method of encoding High Dynamic Range (HDR) video content. HDR technology aims to reproduce a greater range of luminosity and color than standard dynamic range (SDR) video, resulting in more realistic and detailed images. HDRencoded content utilizes this expanded range, offering brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and a wider spectrum of colors.

There are several standards and formats for HDRencoding, with the most common being HDR10 and Dolby Vision. HDR10 is an open standard that uses 10-bit color depth and a static metadata approach, meaning the brightness and color information is fixed for the entire video. Dolby Vision is a proprietary standard that also supports 10-bit color depth (and can extend to 12-bit) but uses dynamic metadata. Dynamic metadata allows for scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame adjustments to brightness and color, potentially offering a more optimized viewing experience on a wider variety of displays.

To view HDRencoded content, a compatible display device, such as an HDR-capable television or monitor, and a playback source that supports the specific HDR format are required. Streaming services, Blu-ray discs, and some video game consoles now offer HDRencoded content. The goal of HDRencoding is to deliver a more immersive and visually striking experience by leveraging the capabilities of modern display technology.
