Höyrykierto

Höyrykierto refers to the circulation of steam within a system, most commonly associated with steam power generation and various industrial processes. In essence, it describes the cycle of water being converted into steam, utilized for work or heat, and then condensed back into water to be reused.

The fundamental principle of höyrykierto involves a heat source, typically combustion, that heats water in a boiler to produce high-pressure steam. This steam is then directed through turbines or other mechanical devices, where its thermal energy is converted into kinetic energy and subsequently into mechanical work. After passing through the turbine, the steam, now at lower pressure and temperature, enters a condenser. In the condenser, the steam is cooled, often by circulating water, causing it to condense back into liquid water. This condensed water, known as feedwater, is then pumped back to the boiler, completing the cycle and allowing for continuous operation.

Variations of höyrykierto exist depending on the application. In thermal power plants, the primary goal is electricity generation, and efficiency is paramount. In industrial settings, steam might be used directly for heating, drying, or as a process medium, with the condensation and reuse of water still being a key aspect of efficient operation.
