Génkifejtés, or gene expression, refers to the process by which the information encoded in a gene is used to synthesize a functional gene product, typically a protein or an RNA molecule. This process is fundamental to all living organisms and allows cells to respond to their environment and carry out specific functions.

The central dogma of molecular biology describes the flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein. In gene expression, DNA serves as the template for messenger RNA (mRNA) through a process called transcription. This mRNA molecule then carries the genetic code from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where it is translated into a specific sequence of amino acids, forming a protein.

Gene expression is a highly regulated process. Cells can control which genes are expressed, when they are expressed, and at what levels. This regulation ensures that cells produce the correct proteins at the right times and in the appropriate amounts, which is crucial for cell differentiation, development, and response to stimuli. Factors influencing gene expression include transcription factors, epigenetic modifications, and environmental signals.
