Gázszensorok, or gas sensors, are devices that detect the presence and often the concentration of specific gases in the environment. They are crucial for a wide range of applications, from ensuring safety in homes and industrial settings to monitoring environmental conditions and supporting medical diagnostics. The fundamental principle behind most gas sensors involves a chemical or physical interaction between the target gas and the sensor material, which results in a measurable change. This change can manifest as a variation in electrical resistance, voltage, current, or optical properties.

Different types of gas sensors exist, each suited for detecting particular gases or operating under specific conditions. Electrochemical sensors, for instance, rely on redox reactions to produce an electrical signal proportional to gas concentration. Metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors detect gases by measuring changes in electrical conductivity of a semiconductor material when it adsorbs gas molecules. Infrared (IR) sensors utilize the absorption of infrared light by specific gases to determine their presence and concentration. Catalytic bead sensors are commonly used for combustible gases, where the gas combusts on a heated catalyst, causing a temperature rise and a corresponding change in resistance.

The applications of gas sensors are extensive. In homes, they are used for detecting carbon monoxide and natural gas leaks, acting as vital safety devices. Industries employ them for monitoring air quality, detecting hazardous leaks, and ensuring process control. Environmental monitoring stations use gas sensors to track pollution levels and greenhouse gas emissions. In the medical field, they can be integrated into breath analyzers for diagnosing certain conditions or monitoring patient respiration. The development of new sensor technologies continues to expand their capabilities and applications.
