Gwans

Gwans are a type of traditional Korean hat, often worn by members of the nobility or high-ranking officials in pre-modern Korea. The term "gwans" is simply the Korean word for hat, with gwans specifically referring to the type of hat worn by the upper classes.

Gwans were typically worn with the point facing upwards, and were often decorated with intricate designs and patterns. They were constructed from a variety of materials, including silk, velvet, and more practical materials such as cotton and felt. The shape and style of gwans varied over time, with different dynasties and periods producing distinctive styles.

One of the most famous types of gwans was the "gui gwans," which was worn by the royal family and high-ranking officials during the Joseon Dynasty. This type of hat was characterized by its large size and elaborate decoration, and was often worn with traditional Korean attire.

Gwans were not only a symbol of status and power, but also played a practical role in Korean society. In the 17th and 18th centuries, a law was enacted requiring high-ranking officials to wear gwans with specific designs and patterns, which helped to distinguish one official from another.

Today, gwans are mostly of interest to historians and enthusiasts of traditional Korean culture. However, they continue to be preserved and celebrated in museums and cultural collections throughout South Korea and beyond.
