Gungans

Gungans are an amphibious humanoid species from the planet Naboo in the Star Wars universe. They dwell primarily in swampy and aquatic regions and are best known for their underwater cities, notably Otoh Gunga. Gungans can live both underwater and on land and can breathe air as well as water.

Physically, Gungans have blue-gray skin, broad faces, large eyes, and ear-like flaps on the sides of their heads. They typically possess a sturdy build suited to both land and sea, and they communicate in their own language, called Gunganese.

Socially, Gungan society is organized around local leadership with a council, and notable figures such as Boss Nass have led their people. They are skilled engineers and navigators, especially in underwater environments, and have developed technology to sustain life and work in submerged cities. Their culture emphasizes community, resilience, and a wary independence from outsiders.

Historically, the Gungans first encounter the wider galaxy during the Naboo Crisis depicted in Episode I: The Phantom Menace, when they ally with the surface-dwelling Naboo against the Trade Federation. A prominent Gungan, Jar Jar Binks, appears in the film, serving as a liaison between the two peoples. The Gungans have since appeared in additional Star Wars media, including animated series, where their society and technology are explored in greater depth.
