Grunnár

Grunnár is an Icelandic term used in statistics and economics to denote the base year or reference year for indexing data series. The grunnár provides a fixed point of comparison over time, enabling changes in prices, quantities, or other measures to be expressed relative to that year. In most statistical conventions, an index value is normalized so that the grunnár year corresponds to a base level, commonly 100. The concept is analogous to base year concepts in other languages.

The word is formed from grunn- meaning base or foundation and ár meaning year. Grunnár is used in official Icelandic statistical releases, macroeconomic analyses, and methodological notes. When data become outdated or reflect new information, analysts may opt for rebasing, i.e., changing the grunnár to a newer year and recalibrating the index accordingly.
