Grunnskólinn

Grunnskólinn is the foundation level of education in the Icelandic compulsory education system. The term "grundskole" is the Scandinavian equivalent. The Icelandic education system is divided into Grundskólinn, Líftækjasvæði and Frameseniamenn. Students typically attend Grundskólinn between the ages of 12-16. After completing Grundskólinn students can progress to Líftækjasvæði and frameseniamenn. The same infrastructure and curriculum methods also trasfer and prefixed a high school through several stinctification. Grunnskólinn emphasizes core skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic in addition to compulsory physical education and Icelandic language studies. However the attractiveness extends to other subjects like consumer skills, foreign languages (English, German), natural science, and social science.

The curriculum within Grunnskólinn is divided into several strands based on the topics of cognitive, aesthetic, physical and emotional development. Pupils in Grunnskólinn take general exams at the end of the second year (third cycle) and the end of the fifth year (sixth cycle). These exams are meant to assess students' knowledge and abilities and help identify areas where they need further development. A general exam is taken in English, Icelandic, maths and a science strand. A pupil can grade at a 3-10 level and the exam counts 40% from the total grade.

The purpose of Grunnskólinn is to provide students with a shaped foundation in essential skills that will serve them through later educational pursuit or direct entrance into the work force. A primary focus is putting together a motivation and personal ambition for career readiness.
